Packaging for Product Life Extension

The extension of shelf life using modern packaging techniques plays an important role in food packaging and will be the subject of a half day course run by the Australian Institute of Packagint (AIP) on September 16.

The course examines a range of integrated technologies with the emphasis on the packaging operation, the materials used and their selection.

The technologies will include Modified Atmosphere Packaging, vacuum and gas packaging, canning and retort pouches, aseptic and clean fi ll packaging, active and smart packaging.

Ancillary operations such closures, sealing processes including adhesives will be covered. Environmental and sustainability issues will be explored. 

Course Presenter Emeritus Professor Harry Lovell OAM, FAIP Harry Lovell OAM, FAIP has been involved in packaging since the early 60’s and in particular has extensive practical experience in the role and preparation of specifi cations.

Having entered industry in 1947, Lovell has extensive production experience as well as Q.C. and R. and D. He has worked for CWS.Ltd, Fisons Foods Ltd, Cadbury Schweppes Ltd.

He has specific experience in dealing with large supermarket chains including Marks and Spencer’s, Sainsbury’s as well as major companies such as Heinz Ltd.

His experience has been across a wide range of packaging systems from cans to F.I.B.C.’s to retort pouches, sachets, aseptic packaging, glass jars, collapsible tubes, cartons, pharmaceutical packaging and the packaging of bulk steel plate, and industrial chemicals.

Lovell has been retained as a packaging and process consultant to Colgate Palmolive (Europe), APV.Ltd., Air Products Ltd (cryogenics), Royal Household of Muscat and Oman.
 
In the area of packaging training, Lovell was a residential lecturer for the Institute of Packaging for the annual series of two week courses in Food Engineering; Food Technology.

Since 1981 he has been a Tutor for the IoP Diploma in Packaging Technology, Tutor for the Master of Business and Technology (UNSW) – Packaging Technology program. Harry was the former head and Dean of Food Studies at Queensland Agricultural College and appointed Professor in the University of Queensland in 1990.

In 1991 he was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor in the University and retired as Emeritus Professor in 1995. Harry is a Fellow and Past President of the Australian Institute of Packaging, Fellow of the Institute of Packaging (Chartered Scientist), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology and also the U.K. Institute of Food Science and Technology (Chartered Scientist).

Lovell is currently a consultant to Meat and Livestock Australia, a judge for the Australian and Southern Cross Packaging Awards and the new Educational Awards.

He is a contributor to the PCA educational program. Other consultative activities have included expert witness advice in legal cases.
