Biograde to supply the Beijing Olympic Games

Australian company Biograde Limited is pleased to announce that it has been appointed the exclusive supplier of biodegradable packaging to the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This US$1.2M biodegradable packaging contract was awarded by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

It will involve the supply of seven different bag formats.

A formal signing ceremony will take place in Beijing on 28 June 2008.

Selection of biodegradable packaging is in line with the “Green Materials, Green Olympics” strategy declared by BOCOG, which committed to use environmentally friendly packaging materials at the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

BOCOG appointed the Beijing Advanced Material Development Centre to select the Olympic supplier from among the top global producers of biodegradable packaging derived from renewable sources.

Biograde managing director Dr Frank Glatz says the contract was won by the superior performance of the company’s resin, which meets stringent European compostability standard EN13432.

"Our effective supply capability through Biograde’s local manufacturing plant in Nanjing, China," also contributed to our achievement," he says.

“The Biograde range of renewable hybrid resins and certified biodegradable resins also meet new Chinese packaging regulations enacted 1 June 2008," Glatz says.

"Our Nanjing manufacturing business is one of the few Chinese companies awarded with the prestigious China Environmental Label.”

“A key element of the Beijing Advanced Material Development Centre selection process was the plan to use the Olympic packaging supply project as a national case study to promote sustainable packaging materials across China."

"Biograde products more than meet these criteria,” Glatz enthuses.

Biograde Chairman Pat Volpe, saysd he is delighted that Biograde has won this prestigious contract ahead of other international tenderers.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the new Chinese regulations on packaging, provided Biograde with rapid growth opportunities," he says.

"The company is now well positioned to capitalise on these opportunities along with the potential for global growth."

"Biograde will now seek to go public as part of its global expansion strategy.” Volpe says.
