Award winning olive oil producer Boundary Bend Limited (BBL) continues to use cubic containers from CHEP to maximise freshness of its product in transit.
Boundary Bend Limited is the pre-eminent marketer of premium Australian extra virgin olive oil, producing and marketing over 40% of Australia’s annual olive oil crop.
The past two decades have seen the annual domestic production of olive oil increase by 660% to 12 million litres in 2008.
As Australians still consume more than three times this amount each year, the future looks bright for Australian olive oil producers like BBL.
BBL is the largest manager of olive groves in Australia with 2.5 million trees on three sites around Victoria.
Owner of Australia’s largest olive nursery, the company also manufactures olive harvesters and bottles and markets its own premium extra virgin olive oil as well as oil obtained from other traders.
The company moves olive oil in various formats.
To ensure maximum freshness and minimal product damage, one of the solutions deployed by BBL is the use of CHEP’s cubic containers, CHEPBOX Bulk Liquids and the UNICON (IBCs), to transport suitable volumes of the high quality oil throughout the company’s supply chain.
CHEP has a range of cubic containers that is intended specifically for application in the food industry. The units provide a cost-effective alternative to drums and fibreboard containers for the storage, handling and transportation of liquid goods.
The use of any CHEP IBC can save up to 20% in transport and storage costs compared to traditional 44 gallon drums, and most other limited life liquid packaging types.
Designed to minimise product waste and use less water in the washing process than traditional bulk containers, the IBCs contain a disposable, recyclable liner bag so the inside of containers themselves are easier to clean.
Boundary Bend Marketing’s Sales Manager, Nicholas Healey, says BBL uses CHEP IBCs to move oil from individual sites to the bottling facilities quickly and easily.
“The key to producing oil of this grade is freshness," he says. "We know we have airtight containers just a phone call and short distance away.
"The liner bags ensure the integrity of our product and the container minimises the risk of damage to the oil itself.
“We can access CHEP IBCs from a number of different locations and send them straight to where they’re needed. With multiple sites of our own, and suppliers from around Australia CHEP’s network of distribution centres are very convenient.”
“The IBCs are fully collapsible and fold flat for easy and economical transport when empty. When assembled, the light weight door and titling base makes it easy to access the product stored inside quickly and safely,” he says.
BBL uses CHEP IBCs for oil in transit, but CHEP cubic containers are also suitable for long and short term storage of other food ingredients including dairy, juice, wine, honey, jam and liquid sugar.
“CHEP’s hire and de-hire arrangement is vital to the smooth transition of oil between our suppliers, ourselves and our customers," Nicholas Healy says.
"We don’t have to keep track of who’s got what; the cubic containers are just transferred straight off our CHEP account and onto the account of our customer.”
“The CHEPBOX is easy to handle. The container can be assembled, filled, emptied or collapsed by one person.
"We don’t have to pay for the purchase, cleaning or maintenance of the IBC. We use the container for getting our oil from A to B and then we give it back.”
