2008 Evolution Awards winner in the Community Partnership Action award, Visy, has a distinguished history of successful community education campaigns.
Visy, which won the 2008 award for its Environmental Detective Program in schools has worked very hard for many years on educating the entire community about packaging waste management.
“We work with 35,000 businesses and 2.2 million households," says NSW Marketing Manager Ainslie Kenny.
"So we’ve been working very closely with local government and the business community on educating the public about the need to recycle and the fact that recycling is a weapon against climate change.”
“We’re probably a unique company in that we’re not just a packager,” General Manager New South Wales, Visy Recycling Andrew Johnston adds.
“We’re committed to a sustainable approach to packaging, so whatever we make, we’ll take including everyone else’s packaging.”
In terms of business benefits for Visy, Johnston points to the networking opportunity.
“If the businesses at the Evolution Awards gala dinner are not our customers then we can offer them opportunities to deal with some of their waste or potential recyclable products,” he enthuses.
“So on that basis, and the exposure that the magazine gives us also, is probably the biggest benefits we can get.”
According to Johnston, any waste has the potential to be recovered and can form part of Visy’s future sustainable approach to the environment.
“Visy will continue to work on reducing energy costs and waste but also other factors that have an impact on the environment and climate change.
Of the future, Ainslie Kenny points to a new concept called an ‘Eco-Coach’ as a Visy innovation gaining traction.
“We have a couple of Eco-Coaches in different states throughout Australia who have been put in place to advise business and the community on sustainability,” she explains.
“So sustainability consulting services are a new direction that we’re taking, as well as packaging and recycling.”
