Diageo Australia is a competitive finalist in the 2007 Beverage Packaging Action Award.
A combination of sustainable design and manufacturing processes, and improved internal awareness campaigns have enabled Diageo to exceed many of the targets they set in their most recent National Packaging Covenant (NPC) Action Plan.
In line with NPC standards, Diageo has implemented a formal sustainability procedure for all packaging design to ensure materials are recyclable.
At present, 92% of all Diageo’s packaging is recyclable.
All cans and cardboard packaging are made from 100% recycled aluminium and paper board, and glass bottles now contain an average of 30% to 40% recycled glass.
Glass bottles have also been lightweighted.
Internal recycling programs have reduced the amount of packaging waste that goes to landfill, and have educated staff and raised awareness of NPC standards.
All advertising material is produced from recyclable materials.
Formal recycling systems or organisations are used to dispose of all packaging material waste, including finished products that are destroyed as a result of being out of date.
Ongoing improvement plans and monitoring at Sydney and Bundaberg manufacturing operations has improved waste recovery significantly over the past two years, while also ensuring packaging materials enter the correct recycling streams.
Two packaging design projects are addressing the 8% of Diageo’s packaging that is not recyclable.
They include manufacturing sleeves from organic material that can decompose in landfill.
