For the first time there will be a dairy technology award and a dedicated series of lectures on milk and milk-based drinks at drinktec 2009 in Munich from 14 to 19 September.
drinktec is the world fair for beverage and liquid food technology. It is the most important trade fair for the sector.
Manufacturers and suppliers from all over the world — global companies and SMEs alike — meet up here with all the key producers and retailers of beverages and liquid food products. Within the sector drinktec is regarded as the number one platform for launching new products on the world market.
drinktec 2009 is not just for beverage manufacturers. Producers of liquid food, in particular from the dairy industry, will also find the right technology for making their products here, because the two industries use many of the same, or similar, machines and systems.
Many of the exhibitors presenting their products at drinktec in Munich from 14 to 19 September 2009 supply companies from both segments of the industry.
Complementing the exhibition, drinktec’s supporting programme will be providing information on the latest developments in the liquid dairy products sector.
drinktec 2009 offers a complete overview of the current status of beverage and liquid food technology in twelve exhibition halls covering around 130,000 m².
The milk treatment and processing sector occupies a large area, displaying the complete range of process technology, including filling.
According to a survey carried out by drinktec 2009, just under 50 per cent of the exhibitors represented at drinktec are also aiming their product range at the milk and liquid food segments.
“This shows that dairy products and liquid food are clearly gaining ground,” says Exhibition Director Petra Westphal. "The proportion of visitors from the milk and liquid milk products sectors has increased correspondingly over the past few years and the trend is also clearly upwards here.”
New: Dairy Technology Award
drinktec 2009 has a top-quality supporting programme for the dairy industry too. On Thursday 17 September 2009, the Dairy Technology Award will be presented at drinktec for the first time.
Bücker Fachverlag, publisher of specialist publications on the dairy industry (molkerei-industrie and IDM International Dairy Magazine), VIM (Engineers’ Association for the Dairy Industry) and Messe München GmbH are honouring the successful implementation of technical innovation in the European dairy and food industry.
The award is being given in the following categories:
- process and automation technology;
- packaging and filling technology;
- environment and sustainability;
- process management and IT;
- logistics; food safety.
The prize-winners will be selected by a jury made up of Prof. Dr. Britta Rademacher, Hannover University of Applied Sciences; Prof. Dr. Jörg Hinrichs, Hohenheim University; Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hülsen, Hannover University of Applied Sciences; Prof. Dr. Matthias Weiß, Hannover University of Applied Sciences; and Dipl.-Ing. Series of lectures on milk drinks in the drinktec Forum
Against the backdrop of a globally growing market for milk drinks (milk-based drinks, drinking yoghurt, etc.) drinktec 2009 is dedicating a series of lectures to this topic.
On Wednesday 16 September and Thursday 17 September, from 11.30 am to 2.15 pm in the drinktec Forum (Hall B1), well-known experts will present research findings and the latest developments in liquid dairy products.
Topics planned include the following:
- Dr. Lynn Moore, Boston University School of Medicine, USA: The significance of milk products in nutrition
- Donna Berry, BNP Media, USA: Added-value for milk
- Dr. Michael Erdl, Royal FrieslandCampina, Netherlands: Milk drinks as an opportunity for better child nutrition
- Lothar Krause, Döhler, Germany: From customers’ requirements to the required product
- All: panel discussion on the topic ‘How milk drinks improve nutrition and can boost the health of children and adults’ (only on Wednesday 16 September, 3.00 to 4.00 pm)
- Global growth for milk drinks
The market for milk drinks is certainly growing in Europe and the US, but it is growing faster in the newly industrialised countries and Asia.
According to a study presented by Nielsen in 2007 (What’s hot around the globe?), the market for milk drinks has grown by 11% worldwide, a trend that is set to continue over the next few years.
Asia-Pacific has seen another double-digit increase, of 13% in dairy and dairy substitute drinks, but in Europe, too, increases of 8% for drinks and 5% for yoghurt are being achieved.
While Latin America — albeit from a lower base level — takes top position with growth rates of 23% for milk drinks and 13% for yoghurt.
Milk and health The growing affluence in some countries is giving ever larger sections of the population the opportunity of buying milk products for daily consumption. UHT (ultra-high temperature) products, often flavoured, are benefiting from this in particular.
The latest research on the topic of ‘healthy eating’ emphasises once again the importance of milk for all consumers, especially children and adolescents.
For this reason many countries have given the task of providing children with milk top priority, promoting it with appropriate programmes.
The entire range of ingredients in milk, but calcium, proteins and vitamins, other mineral nutrients and the energy dispenser lactose in particular, indicate the physiological nutritional value of milk.
