DriveCam records crucial seconds of drive data

A system that records driving data and images in the crucial seconds before and after an accident is among the remarkable technologies featured at Freight Expo 2007 this September.

DriveCam is designed to predict and prevent risky driving behaviours likely to result in collisions.

It will be shown at Freight Expo by its Australian representative, Sydney-based fleet safety and telematics specialist Fleetsafe.

DriveCam combines vehicle movement sensors with a small video event recorder that captures the sights, sounds and data of a traffic incident, both inside and outside the vehicle.

DriveCam uses a small video event recorder to record images and data in the crucial seconds before and after an accident.

Exceptional forces such as hard braking, swerving or a collision cause the recorder to save critical seconds of audio and video footage immediately before and after the triggered event.

A light blinks to alert the driver, and the data and images are downloaded for review by DriveCam’s driving risk analysts, who report back on how to avoid the incidents involved.

DriveCam has equipped more than 70,000 vehicles ranging from cars to large trucks in fleets from just a few vehicles to some of the largest fleets in the world.

An annual per-vehicle fee includes event review, hardware, HindSight 20/20 software, and wireless or wired DriveCam video event recorder.

Since introducing DriveCam to Australia, Fleetsafe has found that professional drivers welcome the challenge to improve their driving, enhancing smoothness and reducing stress and risk.

By providing turn-key implementation and event analysis, Fleetsafe says fleets can expect to reap the benefits of reduced damage claims that result from improved driving behaviour.

Freight Expo 2007 runs from 19 to 21 September at Caulfield Race Course in Melbourne.

Presented jointly by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), it is part of the Freight Week 2007 program of seminars, workshops, conference sessions and site visits from 15 to 21 September.
