Ethical business shines from Ego

According to pharmaceutical company Ego Pharmaceuticals, issues such as ethics and environmental responsibility are becoming increasingly important to the consumer when choosing between products.

“To have something tangible to advertise Ego’s commitment to the environment is of great benefit to our company,” says Ego manufacturing chemist Jeff Anders.

“The award has highlighted that Ego’s philosophy extends to more than just the bottom line and increased the awareness of the National Packaging Covenant to people within the company.”

Anders says Ego was honoured to have received an Evolution Award in the pharmaceutical packaging category, as it is great recognition of the effort the company has put in to reduce packaging waste going to landfill.

“It’s always good to receive recognition for doing the things that often go unnoticed on a day to day basis, such as improvements in environmental performance,” he says.

“Business achievements are generally well rewarded and recognised so it was nice to receive an award demonstrating Ego’s commitment to being a good corporate citizen.”

Anders points to Ego’s continuing work over many years to reduce on-site waste to the bare minimum as the key to the company’s winning edge in the awards.

“Ego has been a signatory to the NPC since 2001 however Ego’s commitment to reducing on-site waste going to landfill extends beyond that,” he says.

“Ego is committed to firstly minimising packaging (eg. buying in bulk rather than drums), reusing (eg. returning empty drums) or recycling wherever possible.

In addition Ego strives to minimise waste during production though process improvements and new equipment as evidenced by Ego’s recent 4 million dollar investment in two new filling lines.”

Anders says Ego has continued to perform well in terms of firstly minimising waste generated during the manufacturing process and secondly minimising the quantity of waste going to land fill.

“The focus of Ego’s efforts has now shifted more towards improving our selection of packaging with more formal systems of evaluating the environmental impact of new packaging in the process of being developed,” he says.

“This will allow better comparison of the weight, recyclability, use of recycled materials and the propensity to become litter of different packaging configurations.”

Anders believes industry awards are important because they highlight the work companies put in to achieving results over and above the industry norm.

“In particular, the Evolution Awards are unique in that they give companies a chance to be recognised for achievements beyond normal business achievement,” he says.

“In addition I think it’s important to promote the National Packaging Covenant and achievements within the covenant to the wider community.

I believe that the covenant is and can be a highly successful model in terms of reducing the impact of packaging on the environment going into the future.”
