Evolution Awards calling for entries

Generously sponsored by Sealed Air Cryovak, 3M, Colorpak Limited and the Buy Recycled Business Alliance, Packaging Magazine is proud to announce the 2008 Evolution Awards program open for entries.

For too long the packaging industry has been a soft target for criticism about its performance in packaging waste management.

While some of that criticism has been warranted, there are many brand owners that have adopted effective and responsible packaging waste management practices.

The National Packaging Covenant has been the leading instrument for managing the environmental impacts of consumer packaging in Australia since 1999.

It is the voluntary component of a co-regulatory arrangement based on the principles of shared responsibility through product stewardship, between key stakeholders in the packaging supply chain and all spheres of government - Australian, State, Territory and Local.

Following an extensive review in 2005 the Covenant was further tightened with calls for industry to lift its game.

Ministers agreed to a strengthened Covenant for five years that commits signatories to a national recycling target of 65% for packaging and no further increases in packaging waste disposed to landfill by the end of 2010.

Hundreds of companies have signed the Covenant proving there is widespread support for industry self-regulation.

Many brand owners have not only signed the Covenant — they have exceeded expectations. However, many of those great achievers have gone unnoticed.

It’s time for brand owners and retailers to come forward, be publicly acknowledged for outstanding packaging waste management, and be held up as a shining example to industry peers.

The Evolution Awards directly recognise and reward brand owner excellence in packaging waste management under the National Packaging Covenant.

Packaging Magazine looks forward to hearing from brand owners and retailers that are signatories to the National Packaging Covenant with approved Action Plans .
