Australian companies are leading the way in Packaging waste management, innovation, technology and best practice.
The strong list of 2009 Evolution Awards entrants attests to that. This year’s entrants include leading lights such as Hewlett Packard, PZ Cussons, Transpacific Industries, Garden City Plastics, Amcor, Blackmores and Goodman Fielder to name a few.
New contenders with promising innovative projects include SC Johnson, Colgate Palmolive, Confoil and Astron Plastics.
Judges will have their work cut out for them to select winners from finalists in each of 10 categories. Finalists will be announced in the August issue of Packaging Magazine and winners will be announced at the Evolution Awards Gala dinner at L’Aqua in Darling Harbour on 19th August.
This year's prestigious judges’ panel includes Emeritus Professor Harry Lovell, for the third year running, and industry heavyweights Pierre Pienaar FAIP and Llewellyn Stephens, FAIP.
Highly renowned in the Packaging industry, Professor Harry Lovell has spent some fifty years in managerial and technical roles, across a wide spectrum sectors including food and pharmaceutical products.
Professor Lovell spent seven years at Cadbury Schweppes food division as senior product manager and the technical responsibility for research and development for a wide range of products from concept to commercial production.
He then moved into technical and further education, which provided an opportunity to impart knowledge as well as facilitating an involvement in industry through consulting.
In 1978 Professor Lovell was appointed Head, and later of Food Studies at the then Queensland Agricultural College, which became part of the University of Queensland in 1990.
Since 1981 Professor Lovell has been involved with the Australian Institute of Packaging as a tutor for the education program.
Llewellyn Stephens, FAIP has worked in the food and vegetable processing industry for 33 years. He has held a variety of technical, supervisory and management roles with Peters Ice Cream, Kraft, General Jones, Patra, Pasta House, Fleury Michon, Simplot, Sumich, Berri and is now Packaging Projects Manager for National Foods Limited. Stephens is also Past National President of the Australian Institute of Packaging and a Fellow of the Institute.
Pierre Pienaar FAIP’s Packaging Research and Development roles in the industry have taken him to the far corners of the world.
He has attended international congresses and conferences where he has delivered papers and been a judge of national and international packaging competitions.
Pienaar has a Master of Science Degree (Packaging Engineering/ Technology) from Brunel University, UK and a Master of Manufacturing and Production Degree from the University of Hertfordshire, UK.
He has been National President of the South African Institute of Packaging, a director of the Packaging Council of Southern Africa and a representative on the board of the World Packaging Organisation.
Pienaar has lectured in the technology and science of packaging at various universities for the past 20 years and is currently a tutor for the correspondence course being offered through the Australian Institute of Packaging, namely the Diploma in Packaging IoP UK.
Pierre Pienaar is currently Vice National President for the AIP, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Packaging, Professional member of the Australian Food, Industry and Science Technology and an honorary life member of the South African Institute of Packaging, Southern Africa.
He has his own packaging consulting business, PackTech Solutions Pty Ltd and has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and food packaging industries.
