Pace Farm is a strong contender for the Food Packaging Action Award, sponsored by Tronics.
Having become a signatory of the National Packaging Covenant in 2003, Pace Farm has achieved a significant reduction in packaging material waste, as well as an improvement in overall system efficiencies.
To June 2006, Pace Farm reduced its packaging stock holdings by 60%, partly as a result of introducing box printers into the majority of grading floors, which has allowed generic outer boxes to be used.
Obsolete outer packaging has been removed from most products.
By reviewing the materials used, the company has reduced product packaging and has achieved a saving of 12.5% plastic material from its 15-pack product; a saving of 30% plastic material by replacing full pallet plastic wrapping with rope plastic pallet strapping; and a 75% reduction of single-use fibre trays, after a successful trial replacing them with reusable plastic key trays.
The company has also reduced its label sizes and altered the design of inner cartons to reduce line damage and waste.
