Busy and thriving companies are at the heart of the Packaging industry, but now, customers and consumers are demanding more in the form of sustainability and corporate responsibility.

The Evolution Awards gives recognition to waste management a critical side of the business that’s not often heard about, yet is a font of opportunity for technical innovation.

Excelling at technological development is second nature at Golden Circle, whose packaging initiatives earned the company two Evolution Awards in 2007 in the Beverage Action category and Most Innovative Solution in Packaging Waste Management.

Golden Circle implements a wide range of initiatives to reduce waste to landfill sites including, but not limited to, down-gauging packaging, using returnable pallets and product separators, composting production waste, and sourcing containers with 25 per cent recycled PET.

The company is currently reviewing relevant packaging spend categories, and identifying opportunities and project selection criteria to deliver increased recycled content objectives, which was completed for its most recent 2007 Action Plan report.

“Site wide use of 25 per cent recycled PET has been implemented,” says Environment Manager Paul Pendegrast, “with these containers having replaced all PET containers previously used by the company at the end of 2007.”

According to the 2007 Awards judges, Golden Circle displays the clearest commitment to wide ranging improvements across the covenant KPIs relevant to its industry.

“Using recyclate in PET containers requires significant technological development to achieve,” they point out.

Ultimately the company has creating a corporate culture that focuses on environmental matters, and has made recycling a part of daily life for Golden Circle employees.

It’s not too late for highly innovative companies to enter the Evolution Awards!
