Golden State Foods ensures freshness with CHEP

Golden State Foods (gsf) Australia, is a market leader in the supply of fresh-cut produce and salads to both food service and retail industries.

As a crucial link between growers and consumers, gsf Australia prides itself on creating partnerships which add value forvendors at each stage of the supply chain.

The next time you bite into a burger from your favourite fast food outlet, savour the freshness ofthat crunchy lettuce or crisp tomato.

It’s quite likely the produce passed through one of gsf’s distribution centres in a CHEP foldable reusable plastic bin.

gsf supplies fresh cut produce to fast food giants like McDonalds and KFC, and prepared gourmet salads to Aldi. As a premium supplier of fresh-cut produce, gsf is dedicated to the highest quality and safety standards.

The quality of the raw materials, including lettuce, tomatoes and cabbage, impacts the quality of the finished product.

As part of this commitment to quality, gsf has a long standing relationship with CHEP handling and managing the many produce bins and pallets that pass through the facility.

The choice to use CHEP’s foldable reusable plastic bins was a logical one for gsf Procurement Manager Chris Burge. The produce is protected in transit and the 3:1 fold down ratio creates reverse logistics savings and improves warehouse storage efficiency.

The bins themselves are lightweight, compact and OHS friendly. “Our growers all take great pride in the quality of their produce, and justifiably so," Burge says.

"Nobody likes to see produce turned away because it has been damaged in transit.”

“The ventilated walls of the CHEP bins help keep produce cool, thereby extending its shelf life. The fold down front means that staff can easily reach in and safely remove the product.

“Using one supplier for bins and pallets has streamlined our supply chain and simplified our logistics management systems. CHEP’s network of distribution centres and collection pointsmeans there’s always one close by, no matter where a grower is located.

“CHEP has worked with us as a partner — CHEP people have listened to our needs and worked with us to improve systems and process to better meet our requirements.

“Our growers are all HACCP certified, and develop programs for their farm and packagingoperations," Burge adds.

"Having a compliant bin to transport the produce is an important part of that process. CHEP’s bins stand up to the rough and tumble of agricultural life and, more importantly, help toensure that the produce does too.

“Because the CHEP FB2 folds down, we can maximise loading capacity on the truck when they’re empty. The more bins per truck, the fewer number of trips. These reverse logistics savings reallyadd up.”
