THE Federal Government’s support for a cost-benefit analysis to develop Australia’s waste management policies has been welcomed by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC).

According to the AFGC, the Government has agreed to a “rigorous” cost-benefit analysis for waste strategies, highlighting the role of the Australian Packaging Covenant.

Under the Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC), the Covenant will have a greater focus on packaging design, workplace and public place recycling and litter reduction programs.

AFGC chief executive, Kate Carnell said Australia’s recycling systems have achieved impressive results.

“The existing industry and government partnership approach, which has been operating for the past decade, has seen Australia’s packaging recycling rates rise from below 40 percent to almost 60 percent over the past five years,” Carnell said.
