Following trials in the UK, Packaging Automation and Rovipack Packaging Solutions have developed a new concept for packing whole chickens in line with retailer demand.
The new package is a thermoformed and profiled dome tray that is securely sealed with film before the whole pack is inverted so the poultry sits upright on the film, forming the base of the tray.
The innovative pack design offers benefits including enhanced product presentation, visibility and protection, and there is no risk of juices seeping out and contaminating surfaces and other products.
Packaging development
One of the key factors in the development process was the strength of the seal between the film and the tray which needed to be able to support the weight of poultry, which can be up to 2kg.
Packaging Automation carried out trials to help select the best lidding materials and seal force required to ensure a secure pack.
It also completed modified atmosphere tests as its equipment offers the option of MAP to increase shelf life if required.
Packaging Automation manufactures a full range of tray sealing equipment that is distributed in Australia by MPI.
