The judging panel for the Evolution Awards is eminently suited to the task.
Margaret Jollands
Associate professor Jollands is the Program Co-ordinator of Chemical Engineering at RMIT University.
She undertakes research in material property characterisation, sustainable development and engineering education.
Polyolefin packaging is of particular interest, including property enhancement with nanofillers and recycling of multi-layer films.
She also works on sustainable development in polymer recycling technology, including structure and properties of recycled polymer products.
Professor Jollands supports the goal of the Evolution Awards 2007 for excellence in packaging waste management to deliver more sustainable packaging.
Harry Lovell
Professor Lovell has spent some fifty years in the food industry in managerial and technical roles, across a wide spectrum of foods and processes, as well as pharmaceutical products.
Starting in London with a national co-operative he moved to Northern Ireland for ten years where he was a technical manager at a large dairy factory.
Professor Lovell spent the next seven years at Cadbury Schweppes food division as senior product manager and the technical responsibility for research and development for a wide range of products from concept to commercial production.
He then moved into technical and further education, which provided an opportunity to impart knowledge as well as facilitating an involvement in industry through consulting.
The consulting role covered a wide range of products from soup cubes to pet foods in retort pouches, as well assessing acquisitions.
In 1978 he took up the appointment of Head, and subsequently Dean, of Food Studies at the then Queensland Agricultural College, which became part of the University of Queensland in 1990. Professor Lovell retired as Director and Pro-Vice Chancellor in 1995.
Since 1981 Professor Lovell has been involved with the Australian Institute of Packaging as a tutor for the education program.
He is currently a consultant and a judge for the Australian Packaging and Southern Cross Awards.
Mike Walker
Mike Walker has over thirty years’ experience in consumer goods packaging.
After being educated in the UK and having gained a degree in Applied Physics he initially worked in polymer research.
On moving to Australia, he became involved in development and design roles, firstly in electronics and afterwards in consumer packaged products.
His roles have had a clear packaging focus with a strong emphasis in development, design and quality, with significant cost and waste reduction successes.
Over the years he has gained the broadest possible experience covering an extensive range of packaged goods and packaging machinery.
Facets of this have included design, graphics, printing, production, procurement, packing, logistics and distribution.
Companies with whom Mike has held packaging related roles include: Cerebos, Goodman Fielder, Unilever, Nestle, British Tobacco, Smith&Nephew, Streets, Cochlear and Smorgon Packaging, among others.
Mike is Fellow of both the British and Australian Institutes of Packaging and an Affiliate of the Australian Institute of Purchasing Management.
From 1988 to 1998 he was a technical judge of the Australian Packaging Awards and is ideally suited to judging the Packaging Evolution Awards.
