LG Electronics Australia was made a finalist in the Household Goods Packaging Action category for its commitment to packaging waste through recycling, education and import initiatives.
As a result of its small market segment, LG Australia has little influence over product and packaging design, which takes place at its overseas factories.
Through developing a working relationship with environmental counterparts in Korea and China, and providing them with information on the National Packaging Covenant and strategies to reduce waste, staff members at LG Australia were able to implement the Recycle Plan 2010.
The plan included the adoption of more readily recyclable packaging designs and materials, including cardboard and aluminium.
LG Australia has replaced wooden base plates in its appliance packaging with cardboard and has moved from using wooden pallets to paper pallets when importing goods from overseas, reducing environmental impact.
LG Australia also demands that factories manufacturing products offshore include relevant recycling and environmental information in product brochures and instruction manuals, encouraging consumers to recycle, and all cartons feature recycling logos.
The company’s commitment to recycling is evident through the implementation of the electronic packaging process Eco-design, which monitors LG Australia’s recycling system and improves its efficiency and effectiveness.
