Roche Products Australia has become a finalist in the Pharmaceutical Packaging Action Award, sponsored by Cospak.
A paper-saving program aimed at minimising printing resulted in a 27% tion in paper use over six months.
Among other initiatives, the company has introduced the recycle symbol onto secondary packaging of pharmaceutical products and replaced polystyrene fill material with a recyclable paper and air pillow system.
Roche’s tertiary cardboard packaging contains 33% recycled kraft — the maximum allowed to ensure carton rigidity — and the company reuses and recycles incoming materials and waste produced on-site.
The comprehensive on-site recycling program reuses and recycles cardboard, paper, food and beverage containers, mobile phones, computer equipment, printer and toner cartridges, oil and batteries.
By October 2008 the company hopes to have implemented a number of other initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging.
