Pharmaceutical packaging: Herron a finalist

Long-time signatory to the National Packaging Covenant, Herron Pharmaceuticals is a finalist for the Pharmaceutical Packaging Action Award, sponsored by Cospak.

The company has made a number of changes to its product packaging.

In 2005, Herron Complementary Healthcare range’s glass bottles were replaced with lighter weight, recyclable PET bottles.

The Chemists’ Own range of Complementary Healthcare products were also converted in 2005 and 2006 from HDPE bottles to PET bottles.

During 2006 and early 2007, the other branded products packed at the company’s Tennyson site converted to PET bottles.

The company plans that all remaining and new Complementary Healthcare products introduced to the Tennyson site, whether branded or contract products, will be, where possible and acceptable, packed into PET bottles.

Herron also educates employees about waste, and collection bins for glass bottles and office paper waste at the Tennyson site will increase recycling rates.

Raw material and finished product packaging waste disposed of in landfill is now, where permitted, recycled at offsite depots.

Reuse of in-house bulk shippers has significantly reduced the quantity of single-use shippers required.

Where acceptable (due to product type), the shippers are now reused up to three times.
