Plastic scrap returned to original source

Plastic scrap returned to original source

In this year's Evolution Awards, Auckland-based industrial plastics recycler, Astron Plastics, has become a finalist in the Most Outstanding Demonstration of Packaging Waste Management in New Zealand category for its innovative collection, processing and distribution systems that are impacting positively on the environment.

Using novel technology, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, Astron breaks down clean industrial plastic scrap from Australian and New Zealand manufacturing sites.

The plastic is granulated and extruded before the reprocessed plastic is returned to its original source.

It is then sold as graded plastic resin or made into plastic sheet products, such as underground cable covers for the electrical and gas industries.

The extrusion process uses innovative laser technology to increase output and energy efficiency.

Each year Astron recycles over 14,000 tonnes of plastic waste through its two New Zealand plants, playing a major role in protecting and improving the local environment.

Analysis and research into raw material properties, customer usage, processes and technologies has enabled Astron to provide better quality products and meet specific customer demands.

Slipsheets made from recycled polyethylene, for instance, can replace traditional wooden and plastic pallets in the distribution of products.

Not only are the plastic slipsheets made from 100% recycled plastic, they can be reused or recycled, reducing waste to landfill.
