2008 Evolution Awards winner in the Personal Care and Cosmetics packaging category PZ Cussons is proud of doing its bit for the environment.
“Essentially, our aim is to save money and reduce the negative impact on the environment without affecting the consumer,” explains Packaging Development Manager John Simon.
“This award demonstrates our success in this, and we are selling the results through our sector. In other words, show that you can improve packaging as well as producing an environmentally sound product."
PZ Cussons has been a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) since its inception. “That’s given us a continuous impetus to look at how we’re doing things.
"We’re in the business of analysing cost saving ways to reduce packaging — in a responsible way.
Simon tells Packaging Magazine that it’s essential to disseminate more information about the National Packaging Covenant through the industry.
“If we don’t, government may well deem our efforts to reduce packaging waste a failure,” he warns. “That could result in more government-prescribed packaging as is the case in Europe. That would be a huge burden on companies, with escalating costs that flow through to consumers.”
“We also have to sell our successful efforts in packaging waste management to our MDs and CEOs,” Simon adds.
“They might not be aware of the Packaging Covenant but they do look at the bottom line. Fulfilling our obligations as signatories to the Covenant is positively affecting our bottom line.”
Simon maintains that if a business looks hard, it will find that reducing packaging is actually a cost savings.
“While it might cause an increase to the workload initially, in the long run reviewing packaging provides significant savings to the company,” he says.
