Significant reductions in waste for Heinz

HJ Heinz has become a finalist in the Food Packaging Action Award, sponsored by Tronics.

Listed on the New-York Stock Exchange, HJ Heinz has three manufacturing sites in Australia at Echuca, Victoria; Girgarre, Victoria; and Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.

Systems are in place at each of the sites to ensure continuous improvement of Heinz’s operations and reduced impact on the environment.

At the Echuca Infant Feeding Centre of Excellence, 3358m3 of waste was sent to landfill in financial year (FY) 2001, representing 0.33m3/tonne of product manufactured.

In FY07, just 690m3 of waste was sent to landfill, representing 0.05m3/tonne of product manufactured.

This equated to an almost seven-fold reduction.

The company has also implemented a project to downguage the tinplate thickness of 49mm and 99mm can ends, which will result in an overall reduction in tinplate used for these products, the results of which will be seen in the next reporting period.

In 2006 a project began to change the material of the tomato sauce flagons from polypropylene to HDPE, which is easier to recycle.
