SITA Environmental Solutions (SITA) has been awarded the inaugural 2009 Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Industrial Technologies Award for Waste Management Company of the Year.

The annual Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Industrial Technologies Awards were announced at a gala dinner in Singapore, following months of research in the Asia Pacific waste management market, that measured growth in revenues, market share and leadership in new technologies.

SITA was recognised for demonstrating a long-term commitment to enhancing waste management services in the region, notably through the application of its proprietary SAWT Advanced Resource Recovery (also referred to as AWT for MSW processing) technology to reduce waste disposal and landfill carbon emissions.

The judging panel of leading industry analysts highlighted that SITA is active in community environmental programs, and its customer base is growing stronger every year, a sign of achievement in customer satisfaction.

SITA’s Managing Director, Mr Eric Gernath, says the company is honoured to accept this prestigious Award, which recognises the success of our company’s strategy to invest in innovative and sustainable advanced resource recovery solutions.

"It sends a clear message that SITA’s projects and practices are the new benchmark in the Asia-Pacific region for recycling and waste management," Gernath says.

“The award is a great achievement, which we are very excited about and we will continue to invest in new technologies and services to deliver long-term environmental, economic and social benefits for our customers and communities,” he says.

At the Awards ceremony Frost & Sullivan announced that, in the increasingly challenging environmental conditions, SITA had excelled in many aspects of the industry from growth to service innovation and the advocacy of environmental sustainability.

This year SITA has successfully commissioned two of Australia’s larger resource recovery facilities, the $50 million SAWT advanced Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) composting facility in Sydney that will divert 68% of municipal solid waste and 94% of source-separated organics from landfill.

This project alone will lead to a reduction in Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90,000 tonnes per year.

In Western Australia, SITA recently commissioned its BioVision Advanced MBT composting facility, an $80 million investment that services seven metropolitan councils in the Mindarie Regional Council area, including the City of Perth.

The facility retrieves and processes up to 70% of waste as recovered materials back into the economy, with the organic products redistributed for the local horticultural and agricultural markets.

SITA Australia Chairman, Philippe Maillard, says it is very satisfying to be working in a group dedicated to improving the sustainability of human activities across the globe.

“SITA successfully competed against some of Asia Pacific’s leading waste management companies and this award recognises the sum of all parts of SITA’s business, and reflects our expertise in delivering the lifecycle of waste management solutions," Maillard says.

"It is also testament to our success in building outstanding relationships with our customers and our commitment to a broader environmental strategy,” he says.

The Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Industrial Technologies annual awards recognise best practices in industrial process control, electronics and security, energy and power systems, chemical, materials and food, measurement and instrumentation, and environment and building technology.
