Global flexible and paper sack packaging company Mondi has launched the “intelligent box” — a method of applying radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to corrugated packaging for customers to scan, track and receipt boxes.
The technology was designed in-house by Mondi’s specialist innovations team, which has developed a high-speed manufacturing process that automatically applies RFID tags in large volumes.
The application process verifies the RFID tags at three stages during manufacture and also allows for boxes to be scanned “out of sight”, where an entire pallet can be scanned as it passes a single point.
Mondi Corrugated Packaging, part of the Mondi group, has also announced its investment in a new corrugated kit for its plant in Izmit, Turkey.
The company has bought a BHS Corrugator High-Speed machine which can produce up to 400 linear metres of corrugated board per minute. The plant produces up to seven-colour flexo printed multi-coloured boxes, die cut and multi-point glued boxes, platform boxes and standard corrugated boxes.
With Christmas fast approaching, packaging specialists are seeking new and inventive ways to make their packaging stand-out on shelves. Packaging management company New Vision Packaging is to supply special Christmas gift-set packs for the Lee Stafford hair products range.
The cartoons, made from PET are produced by Italy's Scatolificio Cristina. The packs are printed using an offset-litho process, while the pattern which features scissor and hair-dryer motifs is printed using a silk-screen process that applies glitter to the outer surface of the carton.
And finally, a new exhibition at the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising is set to open, looking at the similarities between the 1940s war years and today. Examples of packaging will include brands such as Colgate Toothpaste.
The exhibition, in London, will run from January 2009 through to November.
