Technology manufacturer Bizerba from Balingen in the Netherlands recently released its label printer GLP-160 with RFID-module at Macropak, the largest trade fair for the packaging industry in the Benelux area.

The GLP-160 works using thermo direct or thermo transfer printing for printing widths of 56 to 168 millimetres and apart from classic barcode and weight printing, it also enables RFID-coding. It is used as a label printer both in the food processing industry and the producing trade as well as in logistics.

“The Easy-Link-concept integrates the printer into the existing IT infrastructure and in this way enables communication with the superordinate host," explains Dieter Conzelmann, Manager of Product and Application Management Industry at Bizerba.

"With the help of an additional writing and reading unit, the GLP-160 can process data saved on the RFID transponder as well as data to be printed — therefore you don’t need additional space."

Combined with the Bizerba weighing technology components, the printers are ideal for getting started in manual price labelling and are particularly suited to shipping and storage labels.

For example: In shipping, with the help of RFID technology, the packages can be coded already at the packing station in such a way that they can be automatically identified at the following weighing station.

The GLP printers installed there will receive the already prepared information about the receiving address and shipping method from the host, and can then print out the labels straight away.

The Bizerba Labels and Consumables factory in Bochum produces the correct RFID self adhesive labels, which can be described according to EPC global standards.

Roll changes for labels and thermo transfer sheets can therefore be carried out without expensive shut downs. The GLP-160 is controlled via the operating terminal GT-12C with a touch screen surface — in this way system entries, maintenance of root data and control of printing processes are possible without a PC.

The printer is additionally network capable and can also be controlled via the internet.

With the Bizerba E-Service, problems with the printers will be reported to the people in charge of production directly by email.

In this context, Bizerba also offers remote supervision, as well as a tool for remote training of the operators. No tools are necessary to install or maintain the printing unit and paper light barrier.

The result: reduced costs as well as increased printing quality.
